Mkomazi National Park

Overview

Mkomazi National Park, located in northern Tanzania along the Kenyan border, is a hidden gem known for its unique landscapes and conservation efforts. Spanning 3,245 square kilometers (1,253 square miles), Mkomazi is part of the larger Tsavo ecosystem, which includes Tsavo West National Park in Kenya. The park is characterized by its arid savannah, rocky outcrops, and striking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Usambara Mountains. Mkomazi is a refuge for endangered species, playing a key role in the protection of the critically endangered black rhino and African wild dog. The park offers a more secluded safari experience, ideal for travelers seeking a quieter, off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Wildlife

Mkomazi National Park is known for its diverse wildlife, especially its rare and endangered species. The park is home to a rhino sanctuary, where black rhinos are carefully protected and bred for reintroduction into the wild. Visitors may also encounter large herds of elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and zebras. Predators like lions, leopards, cheetahs, and spotted hyenas roam the park, though sightings can be elusive due to the dense bush. The park is also known for hosting a significant population of the endangered African wild dog, which has been successfully reintroduced in recent years.

Birds

With over 450 recorded bird species, Mkomazi is a haven for birdwatchers. The park's diverse habitats, from dry savannahs to acacia woodlands, support a rich variety of birdlife. Notable species include the martial eagle, kori bustard, secretary bird, and tawny eagle. The park is also home to several migratory birds, making it a prime location for birdwatching, especially from November to April when migratory species from Europe and Asia arrive.

The best time to visit Mkomazi National Park is during the dry season, from late June to October, when wildlife is more concentrated around water sources, making animal sightings easier.
