Overview

Arusha National Park, located just 25 kilometers (15 miles) from Arusha city in northern Tanzania, is a gem known for its remarkable variety of landscapes. The park covers 552 square kilometers (213 square miles) and features lush rainforests, open savannahs, and the majestic Mount Meru, the second-highest peak in Tanzania. Arusha National Park is perfect for a day trip or a short safari, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking, canoeing, and scenic drives.

Wildlife

Arusha National Park is home to diverse wildlife species, making it a favorite destination for nature lovers. Visitors can expect to see giraffes, zebras, Cape buffalo, warthogs, and various antelope species, such as bushbucks and dik-diks. The park’s forests are home to playful black-and-white colobus monkeys and blue monkeys, while shy leopards and spotted hyenas are occasionally spotted. Although the park does not have elephants or lions, its beauty lies in the stunning scenery and the close-up encounters it offers on walking safaris.

Birds

With over 400 bird species, Arusha National Park is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. The park's diverse habitats, from lakes to rainforests, attract a range of birdlife. The beautiful Momella Lakes are home to a variety of waterbirds, including flamingos, African fish eagles, and kingfishers. In the forested areas, you might encounter trogons, turacos, and hornbills, making it a year-round birdwatching destination.

Best Time To Visit

Arusha National Park is accessible all year, but the dry season, from June to October, is the best time for wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. The wet season, from November to May, brings lush greenery and is ideal for birdwatching, as migratory species arrive. This is also the best time to enjoy clear views of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania’s highest peak.

Weather & Climate

The park enjoys a temperate climate due to its elevation, ranging from 1,500 to 4,566 meters (4,921 to 14,980 feet) above sea level. Temperatures vary from 11°C to 25°C (52°F to 77°F) throughout the year. The long rains fall from March to May, and the short rains from November to December. The dry season, from June to October, is cooler and sunnier, making it a great time for outdoor activities.

Getting There

Arusha National Park is easily accessible by road, just a 40-minute drive from Arusha town and about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Many safari operators offer day trips to the park, and it’s a convenient first stop for those exploring Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit, which includes destinations like Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, and Tarangire.
